Harrison is fined….again.

Football is a tough sport.  It’s violent and we, as fans, like it that way.

But is what the NFL is trying to do “sissifying” the game?

Or are they really out for the players safety?

Afterall there is some real evidence that concussions lead to serious problems for many former football players, as the New York Times has highlighted.

I have to admit, I love a hard hit just like the next football fan.  I can watch Ryan Clark hit Wes Welker a hundred times….

But every weekend when I see Steelerboy out there on the field, I am glad he runs faster and is bigger than most of the other kids and doesn’t receive many hard hits.  At the same time, I have seen him lay a Hines Ward-esque block on a kid and I find myself more excited over that than the touchdowns he’s scored.

In other words, this issue isn’t easy.  It’s a little in the grey area.  I’m hoping that we can come to some kind of happy medium where hits are hard but not a pure assault on the brain (or the knees for that matter).

Let’s see what happens this week.  Troy’s calling for separation of power and I am sure James Harrison is trying to figure out how he plays the game in the same manner that won him the Defensive Player of the Year without the hits that also cost him fines.

What do you think about the fines, the hits and the Commish?

What did he do this week that drew a fine? I watched the whole game Sunday and I didn’t see anything that crossed the line. Did he glare at somebody the wrong way and they pissed themselves? SMH. The NFL and its players need to find some kind of consensus where hard hits remain part of the game, but player safety is also addressed. Perhaps the NFL can ask for safer equipment as well as policing the hard hits, unless that is an issue that has to be collectively bargained. I would think the players may go along with it, particularly if safer equipment can lengthen your career. The writing may be on the wall on this one, so maybe everyone can agree to it.

That said, c’mon. Hard hits are a part of the game. And the NFL, if it hasn’t already, doesn’t need to glorify the hard hitting and profit from it, if they are going to come down on it like they have.
