Great win and good to have you back, Ben. This makes Steelers 4-1 and the outright leaders in the AFC North. (sorry Ravens fans, kinda lol)
I’m going to give credit where credit is due. Colt McCoy – way to go rookie! You came out there against a top defense and you had a decent day completing 23 of 33 for 281 yards, 1 TD (which should not have happened had the Steelers defense been on it) and 2 interceptions. There’s nothing to be ashamed of with that rookie. Way to go.
But, the Steelers defense did its job for the most part. They held Cribbs to 3 carries for 2 yards. He took a massive hit from James Harrison and surely has a concussion – was out for the remainder of the game. While I hope he’s ok, I am glad that he didn’t run one back on us, something he’s done before. The one who was dangerous coming into this game, and the Steelers did a good job stopping him was Hillis. He had 12 carries for just 41 yards but got to us a little on receptions, especially that 23 yard catch. Overall, he had 6 receptions for 49 yards.
The bottom line, the Browns weren’t a total pushover. James Harrison and the defense had a decent day but even they had some moments of “what is going on?”
I also hope Ben got the cobwebs shaken off today. With the Dolphins and Saints coming up, he needs to pick up those plays that were left on the field today. For example, he had a few timing issues with the receivers. Expected though, not a surprise to anyone. You can work out with a coach and keep yourself in shape, but the way you play with other people was bound to take some time. Still, he had a good day completing 16 of 27 for 257 yards, 3 TDs and 1 interception – not bad.
Mike Wallace led receptions today with 3 for 90 yards, including one for 50 yards. Hines was Ben’s go to guy today, probably because they have played together the longest. Hines beat two defenders and pushed his way into the endzone for a TD today. That’s the game I love to watch. Receivers who play just as tough as RBs. Hines also tied Art Monk for 4th on the NFL’s all time list for consecutive games with at least one catch. They each have 183.
What’s interesting about that is in DC Art Monk is considered one of the greatest WRs ever – but I am not sure that Hines gets nearly the credit he deserves, even though I think he too is one of the best receivers in the NFL. Because he’s not flashy – other than flashing that smile – he’s not really talked about as an elite receiver. Yet, year after year he’s consistent and puts up numbers.
In addition to the WR crew, Heath Miller had 2 receptions for 50 yards and 1 TD. I love the idea of using Heath Miller in more situations. Our offense, while looking rusty, definitely had a few different looks today, something that needed to happen. Rashard Mendenhall did what he needed to do – move chains. He had 27 carries for 84 yards and 1 TD as well as 6 receptions for 49 yards.
Today was a good day. It was marked with a W – but I will be honest when I say that I didn’t see the passion that I have seen in the other games as consistently. Hopefully it was just adapting to the franchise QB back in the ranks.
This is a good football team, though. There will be more wins. For sure.
See you in Miami next weekend. Who else will be there?
