End of Pre-Season: What We Have Learned

Aug. 18, 2010 - Latrobe, PENNSYLVANNIA, United States of America - Pittsburgh Steelers' Head Coach MIKE TOMLIN looks over his notes during training camp at St. Vincent College in Latrobe, PA.

First, we’ve learned that Ben can be a big cheerleader from the sidelines and maybe even a better role model (at least on the field) than we thought.

We have learned that Dixon needs more reps and Charlie might be the most consistent of all the backups.

We learned that Pouncey stepped up and got a starting role before he’s even legally able to drink.

We are on the brink of a great young WR corps with Brown and Sanders learning from Hines and Randel El.

We learned that Ben is still king of the hurry up offense.

We learned that even those who are undrafted have a role in the National Football League :)

We learned that our defense looks reminiscient of 2008′s Super Bowl winning defense.

And we learned that getting to 53 is always a struggle and some of the toughest decisions the team has to make.

What can you add to the list?

We also learned that after one loss (i.e. the Denver game) that ESPN “experts” will count us out. Little do they know, the Steelers like underdog status.

GREAT point Kateasa – and I forgot to add that we learned that Timmons can play OLB too during that same game! He looked good in that role too!

I think we’ve also learned that we rely so heavily on the starting line, that when they’re threatened, (whether injury, scandal, etc.,) we’ve not been quite as prepared as we should be. It looks like the organization is finally addressing the need for depth at key positions. YAY!

Gotta disagree about the defense. I’ve seen nothing from the corners to indicate that they’ll be disciplined or be able to cover.

I’m concerned about what happens with an aging defense, especially the line, once again, when we reach the 4th quarter of a game, which you don’t see in a pre-season.

These things may play out OK…but I’m not sold yet, and the defense NEEDS to be strong, especially the first four weeks.
